Vancouver - Whistler - June 23

(Saturday 23 June 2007) by Karin
Finally, a good night sleep but a hard time getting up. Had to be ready at eight again so no choice. Whistler is the destination today and Tim is our driver.
Driving out of town we go through Stanley Park. I hope to go run there at least once before leaving Vancouver in August. The park is a 1000 acres large with half a million trees. 30.000 where knocked down in a storm last year. It was named after Arthur Frederic Stanley, Governor of Canada at the time. Home to 8000 Squamish Indian. Afterwards we crossed Lions Gate Bridge, a 1500 m long suspension bridge opened in 1938 and financed by the Guinness family (Irish brewers).
Our first stop.... Shannon Falls. At 355 m these falls are third highest in Canada. Awesome view but a short stop only. Lunch at Alice Lake but it was cold and rainy so that must have been the shortest lunch we ever had before everyone raced back to the bus to warm up a little. A short stop at Whistler information center so we could get some information on all the activities before heading to the Chalet Alta Vista. This hostel is exclusive to Moose and features a large deck overlooking the lake and it's only a 10 minute walk to the village from there. I think it is my favorite hostel for now. The weather on the other hand was no good. Rain rain rain. So checked my emails first and got some not so good news. After having spent a lot of time in finding a bus that would go to Zeballos or drop me of somewhere close to Zeballos where I then would get picked up to go to Nootka Island to wwoof I got an email from the wwoof host saying that she was sorry but that it wouldn't work out as I am vegan and she wasn't ready for that. She once had someone else who was vegan and it seems to be too much work. Oh well.... I guess that's just the way it has to be but it's a bit annoying as I was supposed to go there on Monday. After that I decided to go for a walk, even though it was still raining, with two other girls. We got lucky as a bit further down the road the rain decided to leave us alone and we had a nice hike around Alta Lake before arriving at the village. Strolled around for a bit before heading back to the hostel the short way. Definitely much shorter. Dinner, hanging out and time for bed. Not a very eventful day.
The Angel of Sharing accompanied me today.
